Jenna's Tale: The story of her custom ring by Horseshoe Wear
It’s been a long time coming …
In 2011 I became a horse owner & Don became my Farrier. Over the years we spent many hours in the barn chatting every 6-8 weeks. During some of those early days, Don expressed his interest in creating jewelry from horse shoes and nails.
I remember about 10 years ago he showed me a few pieces he was starting to create & thinking how beautiful they were. What I didn’t know was after every client, he was saving & labeling nails & shoes, so he knew what horse each piece came from & when.
If you’ve met me, you know how special my Big Red Horse is to me. There will never be a day where I don’t thank my stars that I had the opportunity to be his crazy horse girl. I’m forever grateful for that privilege & the ride of a life time he’s taken me on.
When Don & I started talking about a keepsake piece for myself, he took the time to learn what kind of jewelry I wore most, what colors I’d want to incorporate, etc. I told him that I loved wearing rings & mostly I just wanted it to remind me of Red.
When he started to propose a few ideas, I knew to just hand him the reins & it would be perfect. Needless to say, he didn’t disappoint. He created a perfectly sized 6.5 ring from Red’s nails, with a beautiful red garnet - embodying both his namesake and his birthstone, embedded on the front.
This is not just another piece of jewelry. This is a keepsake filled with thousands of memories of not only barn aisle chats, but the trip to Aiken to pick up the horse that was “exactly what I didn’t want” … he was exactly what I didn’t know I NEEDED. It brings me back to flying over fences at horse shows together that I never dreamed I’d have the courage to jump, some very creative dressage tests, 2016 CHSA awards, hunter paces in the fall sunshine with friends, easy summer trail hacks, Red nearly ripping my pocket trying to cram his whole head in it when he realized there were peppermints, or the time he got tangled up in some fencing trying to take an apple straight off a tree, & all of the wonderful humans & equines we met along the way.
Horseshoe Wear is not just a ring, it’s an investment, a memory, a journey, & in my case, the love of a Big Red Horse. 🫶🏻
