Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you've wondered about Horseshoe Wear jewelry, answered by the farrier who makes it. Don't see your question? Contact me — I answer every message personally.
Is your jewelry really made from horseshoe nails?
Yes — real ones. I've worked as a professional farrier for over 35 years, and I collect used horseshoe nails from my own work shoeing horses. Each nail is cast in solid sterling silver using sand casting, a technique that captures every mark and scratch the nail earned during its working life. Those imperfections aren't flaws; they're the story. Some pieces, like my hand-forged bangles, are forged from sterling silver ingots using the same blacksmithing tools I use at the anvil.
Who makes the jewelry?
I do — my name is Don Shepherd, and I'm both a blacksmith and a jeweler. Every piece is designed, forged or cast, and finished by my own hands. Nothing is mass produced, and no two pieces are ever exactly alike. You can read my story on the About page.
Can you make jewelry from my own horse's shoes or nails?
Yes, and these are some of the most meaningful pieces I make. If you have shoes or nails from your own horse — whether as a keepsake from a beloved companion or a memorial — I can transform them into a custom piece of jewelry. Visit the Commissions page or contact me to talk about what you have in mind.
Is the jewelry solid sterling silver?
Yes. All my pieces are solid 925 sterling silver — never plated. Some pieces are forged from recycled sterling silver ingots. Gemstones, including turquoise from the Sleeping Beauty mine, rubies, garnets, amethyst, and topaz, are genuine.
How do I figure out my size?
Bangles and cuffs are offered in sizes with inside-diameter measurements listed on each product page. For step-by-step help, see the guide to measuring for a perfect fit. If you're between sizes or buying a gift, reach out and I'll help you choose.
How should I care for sterling silver jewelry?
Wipe your piece with a soft polishing cloth after wear and store it in a dry place. Avoid harsh chemicals, chlorine, and household cleaners — especially around turquoise inlay. For the full rundown, see how to care for sterling silver jewelry.
How long does shipping take?
Most orders ship within 3–5 business days. Custom pieces typically take 7–14 business days, and a little longer during the holiday season. Orders over $100 ship free within the U.S.; orders under $100 ship for a flat $10. Everything ships insured via FedEx or UPS with tracking and signature confirmation. Full details are in the shipping policy.
Do you ship internationally?
Not at this time — shipping is currently available within the U.S. only. If you're outside the U.S. and love a piece, contact me and I'll let you know if that changes.
What is your return policy?
You have 14 days after receiving your item to request a return. Items must be unworn, in original condition and packaging. Custom and personalized pieces, sale items, and gift cards can't be returned — though if anything arrives damaged or isn't right, contact me immediately and I'll make it right. See the full refund policy.
Is each piece really one of a kind?
Yes. Because every piece starts with real nails and real handwork — hand selecting, forging, casting, and finishing — no two are ever identical. The nail your piece was cast from carried its own marks from the horse that wore it, and those carry through into the silver.
